Fast Food Classics
By Edwin Schlechter, Dandrige, TN
I've been interested in the history of fast food in
America for some time and have identified some of the
classic signs that remain in the American landscape.

One of the most recognized classics is the McDonald's
single-arch "Speedy" sign, a prime example of which is in
Green Bay, WI at 1587 Shawano Avenue. It is a parabolic sign
of the type used from July, 1958 to August, 1959.
There are additional early McDonald's signs at 500 West
Charles Street in Muncie, IN and another at 2704 South
Memorial Parkway in Huntsville, AL. A third--originally
located at 212 Brown Street Levee in West Lafayette, IN--was
later moved and now can be seen at 510 Friend Way in
Lebanon, IN.

Two of the original Krispy Kreme Doughnuts signs can be
seen in Gainesville, FL and Spartanburg, SC. There's also a
nice old Pizza Huts sign in Morristown, TN and an original
Long John Silver's restaurant sign located at Plasti-line
headquarters in Powell, TN.
